The Force.com compiler is in the cloud not on the desktop
Tony,

Your description of the Force.com IDE isn't accurate at all. When code
is written in the IDE and then saved, here's what happens:

1) File is saved to disk
2) File is sent across the internet (via SSL) to the Force.com compiler
3) If any syntax or compilation errors occur the save it rejected and
the error messages are sent back and displayed in the IDE Errors
window.
4) If there were no errors the compilation completes and the code is
ready to execute in the Force.com cloud computing environment.'

That's how it works in the Force.com IDE running on someone's
desktop. It similar for the online code editors for Apex and
Visualforce running in a developer's browser.

So your story is inaccurate on several accounts.

Please get in touch with the Force.com team to learn how their cloud
computing system really works.
