Actually, card counting isn't that far off the mark--at least as far as detection is concerned. In a video on the Apama website, Progress Apama GM John Bates mentions the card-counting use case in the context of fraud prevention. He says some of the company's customers in the casino industry are using CEP to monitor players' activity, detect illegal gambling practices and prevent them before they get out of control.
