Too much hype
Remember when everyone said "client/server" computing
was going to kill the mainframe? Yeah that was before
something called the Internet took off. Of course such
idealistic notions forgot to consider the fact that if you had
small code repositories everywhere but more specifically
on the edge of a network, that would make management
of applications a nightmare.

The web reeled in such dreams of naivete.

Now there's cloud computing. Theoretically yes, it could be
cheaper but the risks are far greater. What if your service
provider were to go out of business? Unexpectedly? With
all your data? That's an extreme scenario but a more likely
one is this... your service provider is having issues during
the most critical time of the year and the cloud computing
vendor's only remediation is that they've cut you a trouble
ticket. Sucks to be you.

From data retention to disaster recovery to loss of control
on many fronts there are many great risks with cloud
computing.

A more likely scenario is that cloud computing providers
will simply handle customer facing web sites but not
participate in a company's business pipeline, they will just
aggregate orders and send them to the businesses that
utilize their services. When viewed from this angle, cloud
computing is severely over-hyped.
