SaaS and performance metrics - what's really needed
This was a fruitful discussion and a ton of material was covered. I immediately have thoughts on two of the concepts that were discussed.

First, the reason that millions of companies are rapidly adopting SaaS in the first place is that they are trying to improve their own business operations and do it more efficiently and cost-effectively than they could by deploying traditional enterprise software today. And by selecting SaaS they are actually regaining control, by better using their own time and resources and almost always doing it for less than they could internally. In addition, they have one place to go when something goes wrong.

Pay-as-you-go pricing models of many SaaS companies (like ours at Paglo), drive vendor responsibility and accountability. There is a reason Amazon has chosen this model for their cloud-based services.

In terms of BI for IT or IT intelligence or IT analytics, it seems obvious that you need to fundamentally be able to track in real-time the actual operating metrics of your key infrastructure (computers, servers, network equipment, etc.). This is true regardless of whether you are talking about in-house or cloud-based services. To really understand what is happening, you need the direct operating performance like CPU utilization, free disk space, network traffic, etc. Otherwise, you are simply grasping at what the real performance and availability is.

While a critical aspect of IT data, logs can only help you infer what has happened in the past.
