The TCO of open source being less by a factor of 25% is just not true. Its precisely for this reason that Microsoft software prices have not come down. Infact if you look, Microsoft software sales have increases year over year.

Yes Open source software linux has a lower TCO than Unix. Hence you find Unix being replaced by Linux. There is some cost savings in that.

However do note that Windows has been gaining marketshare. Linux has been gaining marketshare. However both have been gaining marketshare at the expense of Unix.

Though one could argue that Linux has higher growth than Windows, however if you look at increases in terms of volume and not percentages, Windows has the biggest growth.
