I don't see this happening
good engineers are good engineers; perhaps shoddy media engineers
will be washed out of the process more quickly than shoddy
programmers so perhaps you'll see this situation influence salary
spreads since "bad aesthetics" speak louder than bad code. i got my
job because I do mathematics and software; another engineer got his
job because he does data models and software.

the sort of programmer you describe sounds like an "application
assistant." when I was contracting at IBM, I met hundreds of these
folks who would prep Lotus Notes databases, manage the users of
their application, etc... and it didn't take a lot of commitment
or require much knowledge.

for software engineers who like diving into other rolls, I think there's
an opportunity for them.

coders and "media engineers" face the same fate since the poorer
"media engineers" will be replaced by canned software systems. as an
example, iWork can spit out Flash or PDF based presentations from
their presentation app.

the harder problem is "low hanging fruit" since innovation is hard and
the internet allows everyone to jump aboard when it comes knocking.

the problem is always the same: "think outside the box."
