CEO's blogging - I do.
Despite the problem that CEO's probably seldom have anything which would be released on those channels anyway, perhaps the best reason not to is security.
The channel is not secure, the messages are not authenticated and it could lead to more problems than benefits if someone hijacks a CEO's account.
In my case the value of a quarter of a million financial industry readers is probably less than it may have been a couple of years ago, but it has still been very beneficial to the company.
I started blogging to warn of the financial collapse back in early 2008 after individual discussions proved pointless.
The second reason was to draw out my competitors and discuss their product's limitations in an open forum.
So I suppose if you were the CEO of RSA or Verisign, then I'd say keep right away from those blogs, you might get hurt.
If you have nothing to hide and are confident in your business then there is every reason to blog. Tell the world.
As for networking sites like LinkedIN, the CEO's connections are his valuable sources of intelligence andhe may not want to reveal everything to the opposition.
I myself have had a LinkedIn and Facebook profile for years, without including my network. I have only recently started to show my network on LinkedIn because I was happy for the opposition to think I was Neville-No Friends and not a danger to them. They'll find out differently over the next few months as I reveal all. I also didn't want competitors bugging my team with fishing trips or offers.
Media is media - get the message out - that is if you have one...
