It's the only card they have left in the deck, and they can play it because they are positioning an unknown buzzword gamble against the customer's existing environment. I am talking to lots of my customers about the MS offering, but we can counter with the new Lotus Notes Hosted Messaging, IBM Applications on Demand, IBM strategic outsourcing, or a myriad of partner solutions. We can also help with TCO optimization in existing Notes customer environments -- likely to be a lot cheaper and more useful to the business.

There's more than one solution to the problem -- but the customer needs to do more problem definition than "Microsoft told us about hosting". It seems they are scared of something...perhaps the success of Notes 8 and their window of opportunity closing.
