They are spread too thin.
MS seems to be trying to do simply too many things at once. You mentioned some, but Zune to Search to Mobile to the all out push to get 7 into the market as fast as humanly possible to ...

I'll ask again, Mr Balmer, when you are leading in no, zero, nada new technologies, and you are in a constant effort to strive into 2nd at best, 3rd typically and just survive in a market some of the time, it should seriously tell you that you are spread way too thin. Pick your core markets, your core products.

Be it end of life for Zune, take ALL of them and make Windows Mobile 7 dazzle in 6 months, not 6.5 in maybe 9 months. Give up on search and dedicate these resources into the Zune or XBox.

I will let you in on a little secret that everyone else in the world knows except you, you have lost your iron grip on all things computing. You are falling behind on every front, and relying on your massive inertia on the desktop and business to fund all of these things, and the longer you wait to consolidate, the less relevant you will ever be in any market.

Do with that what you will, now go destroy Apple, crush Google, try to coerce OEMs back into 100% MS company line, continue your endless paths to lock every product and service into your proprietary formats then wonder why people won't adopt them/like them.

One light in the bleakness, your new stores. I do hope that you get back to servicing the end users as if they are your highest priority, and not the MS enabled ecosystem. I wish you well on that, if that is the goal.
