Here is the thing. Linux for the love or hate of it has shown one thing, people are cheap skates. Yes enterprises pay, and so do corporations. But let's face the facts Redhat the poster child of Linux after a decade pales in revenue to any closed source binary company.

The problem with giving it away for free is that the hurdle has gone way up.

What Apple did very well with the iPhone is that they associated a value, even if it was only a dollar. The point is that you are going to fork over a dollar to run a certain app. People are used to giving money...
