We live in a more conscious world than a generation ago
and somebody, something, is going to be the next big thing.

Android, I believe, has the opportunity to become the next big thing without even hitting the consumer consciousness (as you intimate). Add to that positive consumer consciousness, the fact that it's open and is not Microsoft, and Android could become the de-facto for a lot of future computing.
