Only Engineers care which OS it is running
First off I think it is a bad comparison and unfair (for
Android) to pit it against the iPhone. Android as originally conceived was engineered to be pitted against Windows
Mobile. So I think a better comparison is between those
two. the iPhone is a different breed or product and that is
why the comparisons between it and Android always end
up to Android's disadvantage. Whereas if you make the
correct comparison between Android and Windows Mobile,
Android shines.

Having said that, only engineers and gear heads (like me)
care what OS is on their device. Most end consumers care
more about how it all fits together and makes for a
seamless and elegant user experience.

That is where Android falls short. Always does and
probably always will because Andorid and the device that it
runs on are built by different companies with different
(often incompatible) fundamental goals.

Android seeks to democratize the mobile OS landscape as
well as provide community driven and free software
products. The hardware manufacturers who employ
Android on their devices are for-profit enterprises who are
bound by fiscal responsibility to their shareholders to
maximize net revenue. They are also at the mercy of the
wireless networks who are bound by similar fiscal responsibilities to maximize net income and maintain
control over their network (read costs).

It is for this reason that Andorid cellphones will likely
always fall short of the fit and finish cellphones like the
iPhone.

I agree with Garrett's suggestion that it may be beneficial if
Android becomes ubiquitous enough that we do indeed
forget about it. But remember that most people don't care
what code is underneath, as long as the user experience is
intuitive and elegant. And that is where Windows Mobile
fails and Android is a significant improvement.
