They're asking for it voluntarily. How is this a
problem? The user has two choices... they can log in
to Hotmail themselves, copy all of their contacts, and
paste them one at a time into some form on Google's
site... or they can save a bunch of time and enter
their login credentials into Google's site and take
care of it in one step. As long as they are being
clear about what steps they are performing, this is
more about what the user is doing, not what Google is
doing.

A lot of sites do this and, in fact, I trust Google
more with this type of functionality than I do, say, a
new startup that I've only known about for about a
month or so. Google stands to lose a whole lot more
than a startup does if this type of feature is abused.
