OS vs Shell
Well, if you really wanted to, you actually could tell Windows to use another program as the shell. In Windows 3 and 9x, you just replaced a single line in a configuration file.

In XP and Vista, it's probably a bit more complex, but theoretically you could do it.

What won't happen, however, is any significant reduction in the size or complexity of the OS. The shell is just one small part of the OS.

. . . and frankly, I REALLY do not want to replace my current folders and icons with a search bar and bookmarks menu. Thanks, but no thanks.
