To compete against safari/OSx and Opera/Symbian
Google's main aim must be to promote android and to compete with other mobile platforms and browsers like Safari on iPhone and Opera on Nokia.

This step does not seem to compete with firefox which is used mainly by linux users.

Windows users are now spoilt for choice. IE8, Safari, Firefox and now Chrome.
