Google had a shot and blew it
It all started with the spectrum auctions. If Google had ponied up and purchased significant spectrum to enforce Android's entry into the marketplace, they would have had something to build upon. Instead, it is as you report - a lot of initial enthusiasm, followed by total lack of support for developers and many non-freedom based actions by Google. In the meantime, every other development system out there has been much more open and friendlier to use. Android lost big time. They have ONE shot left. The Nokia N810 can run Android on it. If the get rid of GTalk and all Google server tie ins and throw Android out to the developers to make a totally open version of it, then MAYBE some enthusiasm for it may revive. Otherwise they will be DOA when the first official Android device hit the streets.
