- Ideas on Web 3.0
-
I agree with the writer that associated with the Web 3.0 there are many intertwined ideas and proper distinction between them is not clear. It may very well be as a result of the whole thing being a rather new and evolving field.
Nova states that the semantic web is not about AI but the data web. I agree with the first but not later part of this statement. Semantics is something deeper than data or metadata.
There are 6 levels of abstraction at play here.
1. Data
2. Meta Data
3. Information
4. Knowledge/Semantics
5. Wisdom
6. Full AI
If we stick to exact definition of word semantics that would place semantic web (fuller definition) at level 4. It is a substantial and valuable jump from information or data (WEB or otherwise). To my knowledge, the currently proposed forms of expression for knowledge/semantics are clumsy and have not reached a level where they can express semantics for broadly useful things except in the most degenerate cases: named connection between A and B. Tim Berners-Lee?s vision deals with level 5 and 6. It is my belief that the amount of processing power will have to reach that of the brain to get close to level 5 and 6. However, I believe 4 is achiavable and I agree with the writer that the Web 3.0 is opening of a new horizon for development of knowledge/semantic based web/systems.
Our company Orfeo has been developing for last 9 years generic deep knowledge/semantics representation that is as close as possible to human thought patterns. We have found a mathematical formalism to hang level 4 and 5.
In our experience knowledge driven system has a tremendous effect in allowing people with no IT background to express themselves to computers to do things such as run their enterprises. In other words, the computer can become much more democratic than at present (Excel democratised IT as one does not need IT department to do the things one can do with Excel).
Early next year we are going live with an online version of the system under ThoughtExpress.Com.
Cheers
