There is a program called SpreadsheetConverter which compiles Microsoft Excel spreadsheets into JavaScript. Handles sheets up to 40,000 cells.

JavaScript is surprisingly fast, even for very large spreadsheets: the recalculation only takes seconds. And for simpler worksheet like mortgage calculators, the update is instantaneous.

The product is mature, has existed since 2002, long before AJAX became a buzz word.
