The future...
I think weather UAVs that focus on impending storms are in our future because the fixed site and fixed timing of rawinsonde launches limit the flexibility of today's computer models. We tested this in the Pacific Ocean Theater in the early 2000s (http://www.spacedaily.com/news/eo-05zzzzzzj.html). This capability is especially promising over water where rawinsonde sampling is very sparse and could benefit our computer models when storms form and make landfall on the US west coast!
