....but if you don't terraform Mars soon, none of this new information is going to do anyone much good, now is it?
Seems like a stupid response? Not so....
1. We breed too much and we grow too little food and we use the Earth's resources too fast. New real estate is of greater importance I would think.
2. Like any other mapping operation, you need more than one simultaneous point of reference. Sure you can "move" the WMAP to different locations, but that will reduce the accuracy of your' measurements. While I too, am curious about the origin of the universe et al, I think we should deal with the problems we currently have on Earth, with any space funding you are able to pry out of Washingtons' hands.
Unless I haven't been informed of some up coming nuclear war, geological disaster or a new and improved black plague.....I truly believe that the only future for the human race lies in expansion, and the simplest way to achieve that would be the terraforming of Mars.....or FTL drive; either would be money MORE well spent I think.
Solar power, population control, incredible advances in agriculture, a very large war or even Soylent Green will not solve our current problems. This can easily be mathematically demonstrated to anyone with the barest understanding of calculus. While I do understand that it is much easier to convince Congress to fund a relatively inexpensive project such as WMAP, I think it should be the responsibility of scientists the world over to band together and convince the money lenders to finance projects that will have a more immediate and useful result.
3. Terraforming Mars, although expensive, will in fact keep the human race alive long enough to actually FIND the answers you are currently looking for. Hell, even Kim Stanley Robinson has done you the favor of drawing up (*via her trilogy) what seems to be the simplest way of achieving a habitable Mars in a relatively short period of time. At least with her method only half the human race will die of starvation, disease or war before new real estate, aka Mars, becomes available.
For any reading this, take this to heart..starvation, disease or war IS OUR FUTURE and our ONLY future at this juncture! Any third rate futures analyst can tell you this. Quit throwing your money away on stop gap solutions that will never succeed in a large enough way to prevent this looming disaster.
Sure it gives us all a warm feeling to buy "green" computers, drive "greener" cars, build "greener" factories....but none of this will undo the damage that homo sapiens in its never ending stupidity, has done to this planet in the past 8000 years or so! This planet or WE are going to die unless we stop breeding (which we won't) or find new real estate.
It's time to wake up and smell the reality folks! We take coal and oil out of the ground, faster than the Earth can make it; and it's going to get get much worse in a very short time. We all need to quit bickering and work together to save our asses while we have the time. It's already too late to save Earth, we screwed that up beyond repair already; unless of course we all pack our bags and go somewhere else (which we can't) unless there's a somewhere else to go.
It's way past time to broaden our view and take in the "big picture" and quit worrying how big our HDTVs are, how shiny our car is, how pretty our clothes are and who has the nicest front yard or penthouse suite.
In closing, I'd like to thank NASA for their monumental efforts in attempting to unravel the mysteries of the origin of the universe. I'm quite sure that while I'm starving to death in barely breathable air, that I will be gladdened by the knowledge that the origin of the universe, or at least the minuscule part of the universe that we call the universe, has been finally determined.
TERRAFORM MARS BEFORE WE ALL DIE CONGRESS!!!!!!!!!!
