Oh but there is this...
If you're really looking for a way to compress music more than with MP3, you could use Ogg Vorbis. It's a free format that sounds better at lower bitrates. More portable players are starting to support it as well...it's been the preferred choice among FSF and Linux crowd for years. Google ogg when you get a chance.
