Say that instead of genetic modification that salmon were bred for years to increase the amount of growth hormone available all year round. That's the same result as the genetic modification, and probably would be just as subject to criticism.

After all, the whole transgene issue was started by a group of French farmers who knew that more productive seeds would be harmful to their business. So they inflamed the usual human tendency to be skeptical of advances, combined with sentimentality for traditional methods, and marketed the attitudes very well.

This is not an argument about facts, but about whether improvement will be permitted.

I wonder whether there are people who favor embryonic stem cell research, but disfavor genetically modified food. If so, I wonder whether they see the contradiction in their attitudes.
