What "Free Windows" means...
There are two types of Windows builds: Free (also known as retail) and Checked. Checked builds are used for debugging purposes; free builds are "normal". For a distinction see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;191890

Also, if you look at the Event Log for Windows XP, you will see a startup event (6009) with the description "Microsoft (R) Windows (R) 5.01. 2600 Service Pack 2 Uniprocessor Free."
