Active Desktop 2.0
The sidebar is essentially Active Deskop 2.0 -- on the side of your screen instead of on the desktop under all your windows. The main enhancement is that "gadgets" can be written with Windows Presentation Framework, so they will look prettier than Active Desktop components ever did.

Gadgets/widgets/etc have been getting a lot of attention lately from the various OS makers. Whether they will go the way of Active Desktop is the question.
