This is the same issue that car companies face - How many combinations of features do you allow? If you did everything a la carte, the number of permutations would be mind boggling (and WAY too expensive)! So the car companies offer "packages" of "popular features". You can't get cruise control without tilt steering wheel. Although this makes the permutations managable, you still have customers that DON'T want tilt wheel - and don't want to have to pay for it.

Modular software should have NO problem offering ALL of the permutations. The "cost" of creating a software package with custom features is almost the same as with "package deals". If you want "Media Edition" you just select the package and you load it. If you want SOME interfaces, but not all of the professional edition - you just load what you want - pay for what you want. Car companies cannot do this because you are dealing with REAL parts that have to be shipped and warehoused. Having tilt wheels pile up while cruise controls are in short supply is NOT a problem that software companies would face. Media "stuff" and collaboration "stuff" come from the same place and in unlimited quantities!

I don't like "package deals" in software - I MUCH prefer to pick and choose what I want. Maybe that's why I like Linux. Maybe M$ hasn't learned this truism yet - that customers WANT CHOICE!
