Taking a look
I've one of last year's black MacBooks and have been extremely happy
with it. The realignment of the laptop line, bringing back the 13"
MacBook Pro and consigning the consumer MacBook to the under $1K
polycarbonate model has seemed to be a good arrangement. If you're
buying a MB chances are you're using for the sort of thing I'm doing,
writing, playing the occasional game, and having it sit on your desk
hooked to a larger monitor. I don't do video editing. I have never used
any laptop's IR feature, though I'm sure that is valuable in a business
meeting where you're using the IR feature for a Keynote presentation.
But there again, that would be a professional level function.
For a consumer model this upgrade is pretty impressive, especially at
the price point.
You get a screaming Core2Duo processor with a comparable system
bus. Excellent Graphics card included. I got on Dell's site and
attempted to put together a comparable system and frankly couldn't
do it as Dell doesn't offer this combination in a 13" configuration.
I had one of the first off 13" white MacBooks back in 2001 and it
survived three years of seminary including being dropped on a stone
floor from shoulder height. My grandson still uses it.
The 'loss' of FW and an IR port are simply a reality check on who's
using this model.
