You have a choice...
Lock the battery into extremely short functional memory, or
run it down. Depending on the type, you're right, you're not
supposed to run them dry... but you're also not supposed to
keep them on power all the time either, in many ways that's
worse.

Consider this, how long do the Li-Ion batteries last in a Prius?
Why? You can't exactly leave a Prius plugged in all the time,
can you?

The shorter you cycle the battery, the sooner it will develop a
'memory.' Soon it gets to the point that if you go even one
second over the time it's gotten used to between charges, the
voltage effectively drops to zero. ALL rechargeable batteries
have this problem. However, some are actually designed to be
run down to 'near-zero' before recharging. These tend to last
the longest under normal use.
