If you ask anyone with even some experience in electronics with any kind of portable system (laptop, netbook, PDA, cell phone, etc.) they can tell you that batteries are supposed to function this way. Discharge it COMPLETELY, no. But nearly dead is where you should stop (i.e. system shuts down to prevent damage).
