Apple cuts 1,600 retail jobs

Apparently same SEC filing Apple ADDED R&D jobs.

MacDailyNews notes that in the same SEC filing Apple added jobs in
other depts. namely R&D. But of course Apple cutting jobs is a lot
more exciting and makes all the headlines (must say that this article
here in Zdnet is pretty balanced though compared to the other blogs).

Apple had a great quarter, best non-holiday quarter, profits up 15%
compared to Microsoft's down 32% but undoubtedly the recession is
impacting Apple as can be seen in the lower per store revenue.

Why the reduction in staff is unclear though and just speculation from
filing numbers.

Was it attrition? Retail outlets usually have high staff turnover. Perhaps
Apple decided not to replace them after Christmas?
