Apple had a head start
Even though the App Store is less than a year old, iPhone apps are older than that. You can find quite a number of apps (Tap Tap Revenge, Labrynth, etc.) that were reverse engineered for jailbroken and unlocked iPhones before Apple officially introduced the capability. Android has the benefit of having an SDK at launch time instead of having to reverse engineer everything, but it will still take developers a while to make killer apps.
