There IS method to IDG's madness for scheduling MacWorld when they do. The holiday season's over. People are done with the distractions. Apple therefore gets their FULL, undivided attention. So when Jobs steps up to the podium and does his dog and pony bit, it sets a lot of stuff into motion. The hype machine (i.e. bloggers) goes into full tilt mode. The reality distortion field gets fully charged. The faithful start drooling uncontrollably. They then usually have time to save up the money for their next bauble due out in the months ahead. They have time to make arrangements to be off work on the day product X (whatever Jobs declares the next big thing happens to be) goes on sale so they can camp out in the parking lot the night before and sing "Kumbaya" till the wee hours waiting for the store to open.
The system's worked FANTASTICALLY well for Apple in the past few years. Heck, they've got pretty much everyone convinced the iPhone is the best phone that ever was, even though it's got issues. Pretty much EVERY review you read on the web inevitably brings up a comparison to it.
Let's be honest though... They don't NEED to have the product ready to go at MacWorld - just a prototype of the gizmo. Both generations of the iPhone were announced at MacWorld and yet, they weren't released to the public until June/July - pretty much 6 months later. So that's just a lame excuse. The idea that people hold off until January's love fest to buy is kinda silly - especially if the new models aren't going to be immediately available.
When someone NEEDS a new CPU, they go out and get it. They might hold off a few weeks if they can get away with it, but if they NEED it now, they get it NOW. The same goes for a phone or an MP3 player.
As far as the gift giving season goes - Apple does well enough for itself during the season as well. There are ads for the iPhone, even lamer than usual Mac Vs PC ads (animated, even) on TV pushing their products out the door. Things may be a bit slower for Apple, but heck, it's pretty slow for everyone in this day and age. If someone's going to give an Apple product - they're generally going to go with whatever model's in the store NOW. They're not going to give a bleeping IOU or some such - especially if that new version isn't going to be available for a long time.
And there's always NEXT year...
Having Apple retail stores doing demos just isn't quite the same thing. There's NO build up. There's NO hype. There's NO plan to any of it. MacWorld isn't about showing off CURRENT Apple products. It NEVER was. It's always been about showing off NEW toys and stuff coming soon.
As far as skipping a software upgrade goes... That's a truly silly excuse. If they've got say, 10.5.1 installed, they're silly skipping the latest patches and updates to bring it up to the current version because 10.6.0 is coming next month. That would be a free update anyhow so that isn't depriving Apple of any income. If they've got an older version (10.4.x), and 10.6 is coming out, then I still don't see the big deal. People who've held out THIS long aren't likely to buy 10.5 now anyhow.
I?m sorry, but this sounds like a lot of hot air. There?s other reasons ? ones we don?t know about just yet that are the real core reason why Apple?s pulling out of MacWorld. The reasons Apple?s given are weak excuses at best. - Posted by: Wolfie2K3 Posted on: 12/24/08 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
