- It would be a good step forward.

Removing DRM would be a good step forward - and a move towards what has already been done with Amazon.com and other online music stores.
IMHO the companies just held out on letting Apple remove the DRM because iTunes was a threat and they wanted more competition. Problem is, that didn't work either and iTunes became the largest music store on the planet anyways.
Truth be known, DRM simply doesn't work. All of the technologies have been cracked, and even if something hasn't been cracked, there's always the analog "hole."
Lastly, this is only a rumor - at the time of this writing, I don't seen any of my music available for upgrade in iTunes Plus. But the day is still young, so who knows?
It would be nice to do something like that in the days before Christmas though
