I was wrong about the VoIP.
VoIP over the carrier network would probably not work anyway (not enough bandwidth), but allowed over WiFi is good. For people using the iPhone (or iTouch) today, does the lack of flash, java, jsp, php, perl, etc, well, how well does surfing the web work today? It is rare today to find a page that doesn't use jsp.

I think the lack of memory resident (all apps will be closed if any other function occurs, like answer a call) is probably a limitation that Apple will have to lift. IM is no good if you never knew you got a message and/or everyone sees you offline on and off all the time.
