Wow...

...I largely agree with you.

MS seems to have lost focus, and I don't know if it's because the market has changed and they don't know how to handle it, or if it's Bill Gate's departure, or what, but they definitely don't seem to have the same fire under them that they used to.

MS products were rarely best-of-breed, but were functional enough that they offered a consistent way of using systems from a wide variety of hardware sources. I have never been a fan, but neither have I been a detractor - I just use their tools where appropriate.

What I don't get is why anyone expects Apple to be better - they have a long history of orphaning technologies. The Apple III, the IIGS, the Lisa - all systems that sold for a short while and then dropped. The switch from Motorola to PowerPC caused many apps to break, as did the move to OSX and then the move to Intel. Hardware add-ons were affected in many cases, too.

In the end, competition is good, and if someone does feel that using Apple products is the way to go, more power to them. Same with Linux, Sun, or whatever, just so I don't leave anyone out .
