Walled Cities
Walled cities have not worked since Troy.

The larger issue here is the marketplace. Microsoft's much
lauded marketshare was almost absolute. It was not, in
fact, a share of the market, but a wholesale replacement of
the marketplace with a feudal system in which OEMs paid
tribute back to their King. This is not my opinion, courts
on two continents have found MS to be a monopoly and to
have caused consumer harm. Tough beans for the
consumer right? Well, despite an impressive growth and a
long development-centric history, many are finding fault
with Microsoft of this decade. Why?

Microsoft has reached a critical mass. The number of
interests they have to support is staggering. The
complexity of the software and the obligation to support
legacy code is also staggering. And how is this complexity
dealt with? Well, it's managed. By all accounts, by a very
few people working on behalf of the interests of a single
set of shareholders. Other complex system require checks
and balances. Open competition and substantive choice
now needs to replace feudal collusion and 14 incestuous
variations of a single OS.

So change jobs? This is your advice over moving to Apple's
platform? Get over it?

How about no. This guy is doing the one thing that will
truly reinvigorate competition and I mean REAL
competition, not this XP vs Vista circle jerk some are
offering under this masthead. This is the guy is going to
make your Windows experience better by moving his
money out of MS coffers and lighting a fire under them.

If you have a problem with technological natural selection,
perhaps you're the one who should change jobs.
