UPS units are cheap and can provide good short-term power; the UPS on my network (DSL modem, wireless router, 16 port switch) is good for about 90 minutes.

Since storms are usually preceeded and followed by sunny days, a small solar panel and a gel cell battery can provide laptop power for a long time.

Considering the number of trees around your power lines, a generator might be reasonable option. Used generators (big enough to handle refrigerator, furnace blower, a few lights) are under $500 (sometimes less) on Craig's List (www.craigslist.org). Last month I paid $80 for a 5000 watt unit that needed normal maintenance (new spark plug and air filter) and to have the bent throttle lever straightened to make it run well (30 seconds of work).
