As for the use of AppleTalk to set up a fast-deploy network, back in those days, there was no denying that, what AppleTalk lacked in bandwidth, it more than made up in with raw simplicity. A few AppleTalk dongles, some phone cable, and you were in business. (Of course, just don't misplace those oh-so-easy-to-lose RJ-11 terminators. wink ) Back in 1989, nothing else could compare. Having been involved in helping to set up one of the emergency centers for the recent TOPOFF exercise, and helping out with a few actual disasters prior -- I was in downtown Oakland when Loma Prieta hit, though I wasn't involved in the BMUG effort, as I didn't start actively using Macs until two years later, so instead wound up helping with communications and basic construction where I worked -- while we were able to get things set up quickly, there's something to be said for having a simple, truly plug-and-play networking system available for situations when large-scale networking and even wireless networking infrastructure can fail.
