The biggest problem with the "thumb up/thumb down voting" is that those people who are fans of the hardware/software/company or whatever mentioned in the article are more likely to poke the "thumb down" button if the article disses or in some way (any way?) criticizes their favorite hardware/software/company or whatever. And, of course, vice versa. It is no more accurate a gauge than the polls that are included in some ZDNet articles.

Is that human nature? I don't know. It's probably more "learned behavior" than anything else.

Having some kind of "disclaimer" balloon pop into existence when the pointer hovers (or passes over) either of the thumb icons isn't likely to cause any difference to be made, and would probably annoy people. Kind of like the popup balloons that appear over double-underlined advertising links on many other websites. Those certainly annoy the hell out of me...
