I am afraid you may be right in your initial assessment

"These are products that many Mac users say they want. But will they really buy them?"

If they will not even comment on the story, what are the odds enough excitement has been built to make them come buy them?

And I am sure they will be comparable in costs to their Intel brethren, both ultralights and tablet form factors. That's a lot of money to spend on a niche within a niche. Jobs is sometimes not too bright, but smart like a fox. I see this as a fox-smart decision.
