The price drop of the iPhone probably does mean that sales are not meeting Apple's hopes. I'm also guessing that the price was too high for the upcoming European market, and market research was showing lackluster demand.

The intro of the new iPod probably does not tie to a leveling of iPhone sales, because the lead time from concept to delivery is too long. This thing has probably been in the works for some time. Its timing is probably much more tied to Christmas.
