FireWire will NOT be dropped, and here's why
I don't have a lot of time, but just to make a few points:

- FireWire adoption across the industry is *increasing*, not
decreasing

- There is *no replacement*, currently, for FireWire on all DV
camcorders, cameras, and video decks (What, is Apple going to
stop bundling iMovie with iLife on their highest volume laptops?
This also plays into whether or not iDVD is even worthwhile and
whether a SuperDrive is needed as well. I think not.)

- USB has been relegated to the exact same area of the
developer site:

http://developer.apple.com/devicedrivers/usb/
http://developer.apple.com/devicedrivers/firewire/

USB and FireWire both used to have top-level "marketing" pages
(www.apple.com/xxx); now neither do.

- USB is a host-dependent connection. FireWire allows peer
connections, with multiple hosts, or no host at all. Apple
functionality that *many* - to many to count - administrators
depend on, like Target Disk Mode, will be gone without FireWire.

I think you're reading a tad too much into the drop of FireWire
from the iPod. It was done only for cost and engineering/design
reasons.
