A future that will never happen.
"But the way I look at it, every Gmail outage
is a small investment I?m willing to make
towards a future when I?ll be able to take its
reliability utterly for granted."

Keep dreaming.

They are machines created by humans, maintained
by humans, running software created by humans.

Not gonna happen. There will always be errors,
bugs, issues. It's human nature - and frankly,
the nature of the universe. Perfection is
something to shoot for, but never will be
reached (not in this universe anyways).

This is an issue that they learned from, for
sure - but not an issue that can be totally
prevented in the future. There will always be
times when demand just outstrips supply, and
parts of their network can't handle it. It's
one of the things that naturally happens when
demand continues to grow.

"But think of each small outage as one more
step along the path to that ultimate nirvana."

We've been dreaming of perfection - well, ever
since mankind had the ability to think. It's an
ideal we may strive towards - but let's not
fool ourselves into thinking it's a destination
that can be actually reached.

"Whereas a software vendor of on-premise,
single-tenant applications has little incentive
to fix problems that only affect one customer
at a time . . ."

Neither does Google, to be honest. If a single
user has issues specific to only that user's
machine, does Google walk over to the user's
machine and fix it?

Umm . . . no.
