If you ever want to have an IPO
Building your software on Saleforce or other PaaS vendors is a bad idea if you ever plan to take your company public, or get acquired. Building on PaaS means you are completely dependent on that vendor to stay in business and keep doing things the way you need them to. If you plan on being acquired or going public, VCs give you the cash to build your own infrastructure and the contacts to speed up the process.
