Platform as a Service on the rise
Hi Phil,

Thanks for the early mention of Rollbase, I hope to see you at the SaaS Summit conference in SF this month where we'll be launching our public beta. Meanwhile it?s good to see more light being shed on QuickBase. As you mentioned they've been doing this for almost a decade now with very little recognition. They seem to have been ahead of their time, but as SaaS has become more widely accepted the concept of platform as a service is heading in the same direction, not only evidenced by the recent QuickBase growth you've highlighted here and your ongoing coverage of Amazon?s services, but also through a payoff on the horizon for Force.com:

`You are seeing a return from the platform strategy now.'' ? ``In the long term, [Force.com] could surpass CRM revenue,'' Brendan Barnicle, an analyst with Pacific Crest Securities, said in an interview from Portland, Oregon. Salesforce.com can ``set itself up as the on-demand foundation for the software industry.'' Barnicle, who advises clients to buy the stock and doesn't own it, predicts revenue from Force.com will be $30 million in two years, versus $5 million in the year ending this month.

While this may not seem like a significant return yet, it's early days for PaaS and there is a lot of innovation on the way. In my personal and admittedly biased opinion, enterprise software vendors that do not adopt a flexible PaaS-style architecture will be eclipsed by those that do, mainly due to the speed and ease with which those that have it can move into new territory.
