You don't get it
The "software plus services" idea is that each sells the other. Have a look at recent versions of Microsoft's office suite and see what I mean: every time you hit a key, it pops up a reminder that it would be soooo much better if you had an MSSharepoint server in the back room.

MS software ties, hard, into MS services. In return, MS services depend on having MS client software. Once you enter the matrix, it's increasingly hard to leave -- which is, after all, Microsoft's business model in a nutshell.
