Streaming server is nothing but a web server

When you visit a webpage you do not download the entire website but only download the landing page. As you use the site more and more gets downloaded and cached. The next time you visit the website if nothing changed then you are served from the cache.

This is exactly what streaming does to applications. You download the landing page and as you interact with the application you get portions of the applications that are needed for the execution. What is downloaded is cached (or not) for re-use.

Similar to the fact that web servers have become the basic infrastructure for SaaS and other forward looking ideas, application streaming will play a vital role in giving the end users a rich user experience and will be a vital part of SaaS and other web based applications. We live in a world with millions and millions of laptops and desktops and they are not about to become dumb terminals anytime soon. People are going to expect and demand rich end user experience. As quoted in this article only companies that realize the strength of centralized control and distributed processing are going to be successful players in the new connected world.
