Don't think so
I'm not against grid computing or deploying lots of servers but I don't think Salesforce.com deployed one database on one server. At a minimum I'm sure their Sun servers are hardware clustered via Veritas or Sun Cluster. They probably are using multiple databases across their cluster in all likely hood running in parallel.

Distributed can bring it's on set of headaches as well. Not to say it's bad but I think the guy is understated the issues Salesforce is having. Just my guess but I doubt a disk drive is taking them down.
