Distributed Computing is now

180 degrees out of sync with the bandwagon. That means that Murph's ideas are being adopted whilst mine are being ignored. I guess this proves that I am not a mirror of Murph.

DumbRays are just as expensive as this Pano stuff. And what do you get for your money? Um, as a user - not much. As a sysadmin, you shift one management headache for another - so it's a wash.

It makes much more sense to just buy a cheap PC (less than $400) and run Linux/Solaris/BSD on it. Create a "golden load" OS configuration that is IDENTICAL ON ALL MACHINES (server and client). That makes training sysadmins easier - so churn doesn't hurt (each admin can handle ALL tasks on ALL computers). Contrast that to the specialty admin tasks that you need to fill today - storage/SAN admin, backup admin, sysadmin (OS), sysadmin (VMs), client and server admin people, etc.

Not to mention that replacing cheap Desktops with EXPENSIVE servers isn't very cost effective.
