Rip Sun's head off and suck it's guts out!

If this goes ahead It will be interesting to see what IBM retains. Adding SPARC to its x86/64 & POWER line up is not really viable. I was sorry when HP axed Alpha for sucky Itanic. Thanks Carly! Perhaps some cool SPARC features could make their way into the POWER line. Perhaps the newest SPARC stuff is too good to trash.

IBM does not need another OS. It has i5, z/OS, z/OS.e, TPF, z/VSE, Linux, AIX...... Why bother with building an Open Solaris community when the existing Linux one is far larger. Just GPL or BSD (back to it's root's) Solaris and port the good bits into AIX/Linux. I'm sure IBM would support Solaris for a while yet.

At the request of Sun engineers the CDDL licence was crafted using the MPL as a template to be GPL incompatible. I don't think IBM engineers have any such fidelity to Solaris. Properly open sourced Solaris is a great idea.

Many years back IBM sold many of their networking technologies to Cisco and since IBM does not have a significant networking business perhaps the Crossbow stuff will end up with another vendor altogether.
