eBay "support"

At FORD, we had many legacy machines in differing states of "decay". One was a NVH (Noice/Vehicle Harmonics) platform - which consisted of a specialty input card (ISA bus?) that connected hundreds of different sensors on a vehicle to check noise levels. A new card was pretty expensive - easily 5 digits plus the cost of new software and the learning curve. They were able to keep using the system by using eBay to procure computers and replacement cards.

OTOH, I told you about the financial server that people were too afraid to change the setup. They purchased the LAST 2 Power4 servers off the assembly line (for a million apiece) and pay IBM big bucks to continue support for AIX 5.1. All because they were AFRAID to even TRY to see if things worked on AIX 5.3. Of course they were running Oracle, ETL Datastage, and BO on a system that utilized VERITAS volumes and filesystems - i.e. lots of "moving parts".

In general, that guy that hasn't paid Sun since 2003 has a good thing going. eBay can supply him with enough parts to keep him going for a long time. I just sold my Netra1405 on Craigslist last week - so I know that old equipment is still "in demand".
